Periana is situated in the northern part of the Axarquia region at a hight of 547 metres above sea level. It has approximately 3.600 inhabitants and has excellent access from the coast and the new motorway. There is a daily bus service to Malaga and Velez-Malaga and the airport can be reached in about one hour. It is relatively near the provincial boundary between the provinces of Malaga and Granada which are separated here by the peaks of Pinto and Canión and the peak of Umbria which rises to a height of 1.348 metres. Cereals and olive groves are among the principal sources of income. A small river flowing from the Rio Guaro passes close to the town and constitutes an important contribution to the local produce. In the irrigated areas peaches take pride of place and are well known throughout Spain for their excellence. The hamlet of Baños de Vilo, whose waters are known for their curative powers, is relatively near the village.
